You don't do the math

I was intrigued by a new book mention that Fred Gitelman made this week about "Expert Bridge Simplified" here:

http://forums.bridgebase.com/index.php?showtopic=33868&st=0&#entry391039

I wrote (okay, I emailed) the author Jeff Rubens at the Bridge World magazine, where he is editor and publisher of the world's best bridge magazine. He provided a press release with this 7NT contract, converted here to a two hand, single dummy, problem:

S K653
H A42
D 876542
C ---

S A
H KQ75
D AQ
C AKQJT9

LHO leads the spade ten. As the press release states "technique trumps arithmetic", even in a notrump contract. The problem is not really what is more probable, a heart split, or the diamond finesse, but just taking things in the proper order.

As Brad Paisley sings on his latest CD:

It takes the square root of four to make babies
I'm sure of that
I'm Juan, you're won
You do the math
(these lyrics may not be perfect as there was no lyric sheet with the CD)

However as Rubens notes on this problem it's not about "doing the math" as Paisley wants. Instead play off all your clubs, cash three hearts ending in dummy and see if the hearts split.

On the hand they don't, with RHO having started with four. Now cash the spade king, and when RHO keeps his last heart, discard yours. Finally in the two card ending you lead a diamond from dummy towards the AQ, and RHO follows with the jack. Does he have the diamond king?

No, his last card is a heart. Play the diamond ace, drop the king, make seven notrump, and see the Bridge World site (links to the right) to purchase this book.

Out on a limb

I was out on a tree branch the other day, trimming the too high cedar hedges around our too large backyard. I was in a rush to finish all my yard work for the next couple of weeks, because I'm going to spend a lot of time in front of my desktop, my laptop, and my iphone watching the world championships that start playing this Sunday.

My predications for the World Championships are going out on a limb too:

Bermuda Bowl:
Winner: Bulgaria
2nd: USA2
3/4: Italy, Russia
5/8: Brazil, Netherlands, Norway, USA1

Venice Cup:
Winner: USA1
2nd: China
3/4: Canada, Germany
5/8: Brazil, France, Italy, USA2

Seniors:
Winner: England
2nd: USA1
3/4: Canada, Indonesia
5/8: Australia, Poland, Sweden, USA2

A couple of my winner predications I haven't seen anybody else clever foolish enough to make: England in the seniors, and Bulgaria for the Bermuda Bowl. Needless to say, I may want to delete this entry in a week or two. Still, you got to go out on a limb to get the yard work done.

Last Sunday the local Bridge Connection club had a fund raiser game for Canada's teams. Afterwards some of us went out to a restaurant, and we are partly pictured here - the second on the left is Pamela Nisbet of the Canada Master Point Press Women's team. In the second picture directly across from Pamela is Boris Baran of Canada's Seniors team. After they both win their events, they will saw off the limb that I'm hanging from in this post (not pictured below):

Buy-Buy, but just not now

Can a bridge blog spur you to purchase something?

Two recent postings got me.

First, last week there was this one about Ken Rexford's upcoming book on a Two Diamond opening strong with four spades (and a Two Club opening being strong without four spades):

http://cuebiddingatbridge.blogspot.com/2009/08/coming-soon.html

I read that and said "I've got to buy it as soon as it comes out"

Then today there was Ray Lee's posting about Bob MacKinnon's upcoming book Bridge, Probability and Information:

http://ray.bridgeblogging.com/?p=184

I read that and said "I've got to buy it as soon as it comes out". Sadly that will not be until next spring.

Summary - World Championships System Review

It has taken just over a week of part-time work to complete the preliminary system review. This would take longer the first time one does it (if drafted into this work), and would be quicker if done full-time.

At this stage of the review process there are three steps that take place now:

1) Clean-up and revise. Each of the system reviews is looked at again, and updates are made to correct mistakes and add new details. For this post here and the posts below, updates will be made in the next couple of weeks to reflect changes. In particular, for readability, the "Total so far" sections of the System Review posts have been removed (see the end of this post for it), as these were given for those following on a post-by-post basis.

2) The team members are provided with sets of hands played by various pairs of their upcoming opponents. The amount that would be given would depend on the time available (and corresponding motivation) of the team members for their preparatory work. A full-time researcher would also do tendency analysis (e.g. when do they open or not, when do they overcall or not, what is their carding and when does it apply) with especially focus on the stronger teams, as every edge is necessary to beat them.

3) The defences necessary are identified. These are separated into two groups: the defences that apply more often, and the defences that will rarely be needed. Each pair on a team is expected to have available the defences to the frequent items, and team members are provided a default defence in case they don't have one available. For the rarely needed defences, for those strange one-of-a-kind methods, defences are prepared but team members are not expected to devote much time in getting to know them - these rare methods can only occur in one or a few matches, and may never come up.

Here's a look at the popular methods that a team must be prepared for:

World Championships System Review

Since there is no Canadian team in the Bermuda Bowl this year, I'm going to do some of what I do for research in blog form here. Since the material will be dry (no hands, no stories), I would understand anybody who skips the next twenty or so blog posts. However you might want to skim read the posts if you intend to enter the World Team Championships Predictor 2009 contest, at the Beer Card blog:

http://thebeercard.blogspot.com/2009/08/world-team-championships-predictor-2009.html

It seems Paul's blog should be named the Beer Card and Wine Prize blog but let's not quibble yet. Of course that would make this blog the Dry Bridge Items blog.

Once you've entered for wine, enter for books at the bridgeblogging site:

http://linda.bridgeblogging.com/?p=1371

Those are excellent prizes, and some team members this year will want to write "Win the Bermuda Bowl with me too".

The convention cards examined for the System Review are found in the systems folder of:

http://www.ecatsbridge.com/documents/docdefault.asp?page=2009Brazil

The worldbridge.org site will be used to search the participants and I find out there experience in world events:

http://www.worldbridge.org/people/

As players gain experience at world events, they get better at these events, feeling comfortable, and understanding what they need to do to make the playoffs.

Teams will be covered in alphabetic order, except for Mexico and Morocco, who will be left for the last as they don't have a full set of posted cc's yet, even this close to the event. Key gaps in a cc will be noted - that is where a cc is not clear or does not provide the necessary information. Ideally cc's should be submitted to a screening committee, that reviews the cc and asks for additional information as appropriate - the current setup of just accepting anything that is submitted can result in poor disclosure, and, in some cases, misinformation.

At the bottom of each post will be the running total of methods - after all teams are finished, the running total will present a picture of systems used in the Bermuda Bowl. For example, we will know in how many systems the 1C openings still promise 3+Cs.

The system review will present a summary of each system, and then note anything opponents should watch out for: that is methods they should have pre-determined defences to. BridgeMatters has simple defences to everything mentioned and if you want to know what any particular one is, please leave a comment to request. By simple, it does not been best. Since specialized methods are unlikely to occur in any particular match, it doesn't help a team much to employ sophisticated methods against infrequent methods. Instead a simple defence requires less effort to get ready, yet is good enough if it needs to be used that match. Often partnerships will have their own defences, and they should use them when they have them.

The best teams have super expert coaches such as the Kokish/Kraft team or the Martels, who prepare many pages of defences and notes about the opponents. Their level of detail is amazing, and the defences offered to their teams are state-of-the-art. For a top team, having coaches like these can be a critical success factor for winning.

Spingold Final - Part 2

Let's now look at the last three boards of the first half. On board 30, everybody was bidding in the closed room, although the hand with just a ten was bidding to escape:

Helness redoubled at his second turn to bid to await developments. The nice development was a two club bid, and he doubled. Now it was North's turn to redouble - this was SOS: pick another suit partner. South was well placed to bid 2D - with the AQT96 of diamonds over the opening diamond bidder. Having established a penalty auction, Helness passed this for Sontag to decide. With a flat hand Sontag opted to defend but the defense would need to see the complete layout to lock declarer in hand enough times to score down 3 and 2 IMPs. Instead down 2 was another 4 IMPs away when East-West in the Open Room reached 4S - East passed, then 1D-1S-P-2D;-2H-4S, making five.

On the penultimate board of the first half, there was a disaster by the new partnership of Helness-Sontag.

North opened 2H to show 10-15, 5+Hs, 4+Cs. Sontag overcalled this with 4D, showing Ds and Ss, in a Leaping Michaels approach as over weak twos. Helness took this as just diamonds, and raised to five, and even after this got doubled there was no retreat to spades. He told the vugraph operator after the board that their agreement was 3C over 2H was Ds and Ss, since the opening bid promised Cs. In the open room it was 2H-4D-4H-4S, making five. 4D was Ds and Ss, but Rubin knew what it meant over a weak two. That was 13 IMPs.

On the last board of the first half, Verhees passed the 1H overcall, and then passed his partner's takeout double.

This went for 800 on the line declarer picked. In the Open Room, Meltzer bid 1NT over 1H, and played there for +120, losing 12 IMPs. The 58-0 result over seven boards produced a halftime score of 87-23, and a final score of 138-65 for the Jansma team, the 2009 Spingold champions.
Spingold Final - Part 1

The Spingold Final was effectively decided in the last seven boards of the first half. These seven broads produced a 58-0 run by the Jansma team.

Let's first look at board 26, 27, and 29 (28 was a push, down in no-play games):

On board 26, in the open room Ekeblad used Stayman, then Smolen (3H showing exactly 4Hs, longer spades, game force), then transferred to spades with 4D to reach 4S by the strong hand.

North led a heart, and declarer cleverly played the heart eight, which got South to play the jack. Declarer won this, cashed the other top heart, and then played three rounds of diamonds, discarding the club king from dummy. There was no way to beat it at this point since dummy's spade spots were just good enough. If South returns a trump, declarer can use dummy's heart spots to make an overtrick.

In the closed room, East, Alan Sontag, used Stayman, then bid 2S. This showed an invite with 5 or more spades. West jumped to 3NT and East decided to rest there, even with a shapely 6-4.

The contract had no play but declarer was encouraged by a heart lead. However even with the friendly diamonds, when declarer gave up a spade, North promptly played club ace and another to pick up 12 IMPs.

On the next board, in the open room the Meltzer team got to a quiet 4S, and made five on the club king lead. In the closed room there was more action:

We don't know the meanings of all these bids, though 4D was a slam try in spades, and 4H negative (much like Optional Roman Blackwood in ETM systems), and 4NT seems to be keycard for spades. The 2C and 2H bids were likely game forcing relays finding out hand type before setting spades as trumps. Helness had the key decision on the hand - whether to double 5C for the lead or not. His problem was he didn't know, on this auction, whether his partner was going to be on lead. By not doubling, the opponents got to slam that is down off the top. However by not doubling, partner didn't find the club lead, and the slam made for 11 IMPs.

On board 29, Sontag-Helness got to 4S quickly.

This had play, but declarer misguessed diamonds to lose a heart, a club, and two diamonds - declarer doesn't know both club honors are slotted right and thus, with trumps 3-1, wanted to make the best play for three diamond tricks, but South's diamond discard might have been a clue to getting it right. The auction by Ekeblad-Rubin the Open Room was 1C(big)-1D(negative);-1S(4+Ss, forcing)-2S(minimum raise) for +140 on the same diamond misguess and 6 IMPs.

Sometimes a good bid gets a bad result

Yesterday a bad 3rd quarter cost the Diamond team the match, and the winning Jansma team faces the all star and original 4th seed Meltzer team today. In the 3rd quarter one particular board had both the Diamond pairs having a bad result, but understandable. By understandable, I mean I could easily take the same actions at the table, and suffer the same bad results.

At the Open Room table, after partner overcalls in hearts and RHO shows heart shortness with a spade fit, Platnick knows that a club lead might be crucial against a spade contract.

It turns out it isn't as South's clubs can't be discarded, but on many other layouts a club lead could be essential against a spade slam. Thus Platnick bid 5C, lead directional. If this was doubled, he would retreat to 5H. It was not doubled. It went down 8, for -800, against, at best, -450 in 4S or 5S. I liked the 5C bid, bad result and all.

In the Closed Room, West was quiet and North used a heart splinter, showing heart shortness, spade fit, and game going values. Here the game going values were based a little more on shape and a little less on points.

South bid Roman Key Card Blackwood. Now if West hadn't doubled, North's bid is 5NT, showing two keycards (SK, DA) and a useful void. This gets the partnership too high, but if the North hand had one more diamond then 6S was home on the heart lead made at the table.

However West did double 4NT for some reason, at least according to the hand record. Now I think it is quite understandable to play "system on" over this double - it keeps the partnership in the land of "we know what we are doing". Others though might want to use the extra bidding space, perhaps showing the 5C reply to 4NT now with pass, the 5D reply to 4NT now with redouble, and the 5H reply to 4NT now with 5C etc. In effect this shifts all bids down two steps. Thus the 5NT reply would be 5H, assuming both players knew that this step reduction would apply after the double. If North's reply was 5H, it would have allowed South to stop in 5S.

Still stopping on 5S opposite two keycards and a useful void could have been wrong if North had two aces, since a missing spade king would be likely to fall if North had 4 or 5 spades. Thus even if North-South had used a two-step reduction after the double of RKCB, it still could have been right for South to try 6S, hoping for two aces in dummy, or a heart lead and a dummy that could provide club discards.

Thus we have a board where both partnerships did something understandable, but it cost the team 13 IMPs, as part of the 3rd quarter loss of 45-14. Sometimes it's just not the day for your bids.

One of my "underdogs" (see Tuesday's post) will be in the Spingold final tomorrow. However the cost of today's dog fight will be the lost of my other remaining underdog today.

At the top level of bridge we see that bidding agreements matter.

In the Round of 32, Lynch vs. Markowicz match, these were the pair of hands on board 9:

S: Q986
H: A5
D: A42
C: A743

S: AJT73
H: K9
D: KJ987
C: 6

Both pairs got to 6 for a push. The question is whether your agreements are sophisticated enough to handle not only this particular deal, but the hands where we slightly vary the cards, such as:

S: Q986
H: A5
D: A42
C: A743

S: AT432
H: KJ
D: K9876
C: J
---

S: Q986
H: A5
D: A42
C: A743

S: AJT73
H: K96
D: KQT8
C: 6

---

S: Q986
H: A5
D: A42
C: A743

S: KJT73
H: KJ
D: K9875
C: Q

---

In a match yesterday, the fantastic BBO Vugraph coordinator and commentator Roland Wald remarked that this is not the event to start inventing bids in. He wasn't talking about this next board but could have been:

S: AK42
H: ---
D: KQ97
C: KJT64

S: Q62
H: KJ
D: AJ64
C: Q982

White vs. red DeKnijff - Wrang bid this 1C-(1H)-2C-(3H)-4H-5NT-7D-(X), for down 1 and lose 11 IMPs to the 3NT +490 in the other room. As the commentators noted, 3NT is down on a heart lead, but after the auction 1C-3NT, a spade was led from a doubleton instead of leading from longest and strongest.

Key here is having sophisticated enough agreements to get to a minor suit small slam instead of 3NT, and to have the meta agreements in place to cover bids such as 5NT on the above auction. It looks like one meant it as "pick a slam partner", while the other took it as a grand slam invite of some sort. Yet another hand to file away under the heading: Don't bid grands unless you are a lock for the contract. The De Knijff team lost by one IMP.

---

The system base can deliver swings too:

The Blanchards (Robert and Shane) playing for the Rigal team arrived at a one heart contract with one standard bid:

S: AQT5
H: AKT742
D: A3
C: Q

S: 87432
H: 8
D: QJ652
C: 95

For the Lynch team, the Poles (and pseudo Russians when playing on Russian national team) Balicki and Zmudzinski used a Polish club system to get to 4S:

1C(weak NT OR 4-4-4-1 exactly OR 15+ natural OR 17/18+ any)-
1D(often negative)-;
1H(can be as short as 3 if weak notrump and no 4cM, can be 17/18-21 with 4+Hs)-
1S(spades, not enough to bid 7+ 1S over 1C)-;
4S

The pointed suits were friendly enough for +620 and 11 IMPs, on their way to a win and a semi-final match against the Meltzer team. However is this a question of base system, or allowing light but shapely responses to one level openings? Style can matter too, and the semi-finals will be fun to watch to find out what really matters to win.
