careful what you ask for
Sometimes making a lead directional double
can be costly when declarer is an expert.
This was board 7 of the Open Pairs on
Saturday afternoon:

KQT4 On this board West open one club, North introduced
diamonds, East, Avi Poriah,
bid spades,
and then, when raised by West, he asked with 4NT Blackwood.
West replied five clubs to show one keycard,
and North doubled for a club lead.
Against five spades, South
duly led a club, and Avi played for the endplay.
He won the club ace, ruffed a club, went back
to a high spade in dummy,
ruffed a club, back to the other high spade and ruffed dummy's last club.
Now heart ace and a heart to the 9 left North leading towards the diamond king,
and wishing he had never asked for that club lead.

In a knockout event earlier this week, here was an
interesting play hand:

The contract was four spades doubled, but with lots of
information from the bidding and opening lead:
- West had doubled South’s opening one spade bid
- East had jumped to four hearts over North’s two spade
response, then doubled the four spade contract
- West led a small heart, so not as likely to have a
diamond suit headed by KQ
Here was the full layout:

So win the heart Q, use the heart A to discard a
diamond, and then play a spade.
Once trumps are out of the way, start clubs from the top
and wrap up the contract.
East had bid four hearts to stampede the opponents
into game – be careful that the herd doesn’t trample you.
