Sometimes just bid more

Saturday evening gave us another board of the evening pairs that features two of the four hands with voids:

Dlr: W
Vul: EW

 A73
 Q2
 QT954
 543

 82
 J954
 K87632
 7

 ---
 AK8763
 AJ
 AKT86

 KQJT9654
 T

 QJ92

There is only one thing that South needs to do on this hand – whatever EW bids in s the South hand has to bid in s.

Friday Summary Results

Bracketed KO #4 A: Beverly Perry, Gavin Wolpert, Kevin Bathurst, John Hurd & Curtis Cheek

Bracketed KO #4 B: Donald Lewis, Ted Hill, Veljo Laur & Edward Ziobrowski

Bracketed KO #4 C: Betty Kay, Sheila Pancer, Shirley Nicholls & Terry Burns

Friday Open Pairs: Dwight Bender & Gary Whiteman

Friday Seniors Pairs: Sid Brownstein & Sid McGowan

Friday Morning I/N Pairs: Lucille Watson & L Allan

Friday Afternoon Pairs (Series Pairs #2 3 of 3): John Cook & Alan McLellan

Friday Afternoon I/N Pairs: Judith Whitehead & Van Whitehead

Friday Evening Swiss: Jacques Fradette, Romain Jacques, Louise Zicat & Philippe Ducharme

Friday Evening Pairs (Series Pairs #3 1 of 3): Karen & Glen Ashton

Series Pairs #2: Brian Veale & Keith Veale

Big hand and a big problem

This was a big hand in the Friday evening pairs, but it ran into some obstruction:

Dlr: W
Vul: None

 A
 AJ4
 AKJ76
 AJ97

The bidding starts Pass-Pass-1-Double-3-Pass-4-?  3 was Bergen over your double, a constructive raise with 4 or longer s.  Having doubled once, what can you do but double again?  It turns out the opponents are bidding more on shape than points (no surprise).  You don’t get very rich when partner passes your second double, because opener has a  void and dummy a  void.  It’s just another hand in the evening pairs with two voids.

Thursday Summary Results

Bracketed KO #2 A: John Zaluski, David Colbert, Gary Whiteman, Michael Cafferata, Bert Eccles & Jonathan Steinberg

Bracketed KO #2 B: C Patricia Spratt, Dyane Maurice, Jean Stevenson & Kosta Antchev

Bracketed KO #2 C: Patricia Morrison, John Vincent, Sophie Chess & Maureen Donovan

Bracketed KO #2 D: Larry Richardson, Glenn Collins, Bruce Tennant & Wayne Walker

Thursday Open Pairs: Paul Thurston & Jeffrey Smith

Thursday Morning I/N Pairs: Marie Blanchet & Gabriel Jacques

Thursday Afternoon Pairs (Series Pairs #2 2 of 3): Brian Veale & Keith Veale

Thursday Afternoon I/N Pairs: Barbara Varney & Linda Seright

Thursday Evening Swiss: Karen & Glen Ashton, Peter Clark & Joseph Sauro

Thursday Evening Pairs (Series Pairs #1 3 of 3): Mileva Jobin & Serge Mercille

Thursday Evening I/N Pairs: Joan Ledrew & Viki O'Dea

Series Pairs #1: Karen & Glen Ashton

Don’t make it easy

This hand produced a swing in the Swiss Thursday evening:

Dlr: W
Vul: None

 9532
 4
 862
 AT753

The bidding starts 1-Pass-2-2-3-?  It is no use bidding 3 here – that will just drive your opponents into 4.  Either pass or bid 4 immediately - at the table this hand bid the game, was left undoubled, and went down two for -100 – at the other table 4 doubled made for a match winning swing.

Wednesday Summary Results

Bracketed KO #1 A: Beverly Perry, Gavin Wolpert, Kevin Bathurst, John Hurd & Curtis Cheek

Bracketed KO #1 B: Robert Grant, Lionel Carriere, Jacqueline Wetmiller & George Kitchen

Bracketed KO #1 C: Eleanor Cavanagh, Patrick Fitzgerald, Patricia Lavergne, Stuart McLeod & Thomas Poisson

Bracketed KO #1 D: Don McNiven, William Barbour, Kees Schipper & Ron Reynolds

Wednesday Open Pairs: Alice Blinn & Lise FischlHappy Birthday Lise!

Wednesday Morning Swiss: Bill Valliant, Doug Pile, Pamela Nixon & Fatos Baudouin

Wednesday Morning I/N Pairs: Rene Spooner & Gilberte Spooner

Wednesday Afternoon Pairs (Series Pairs #2 1 of 3): Mary Fehrenbach & Gail Bell

Wednesday Afternoon I/N Pairs: Viki O'Dea & Joan Ledrew

Wednesday Evening Swiss: Jeffrey Smith, Paul Thurston, Mike Cappelletti Sr & Linda Lewis

Wednesday Evening Pairs (Series Pairs #1 2 of 3): Waldemar Frukacz & Ron Zambonini

Wednesday Evening I/N Pairs: Terry Young & Eliza Erskine

Sometimes just bid it

Board 14 of the pairs on Wednesday evening featured two of the four hands with voids:

Dlr: E
Vul: None

 QT953
 ---
 AKT62
 753

 K874
 Q976
 Q93
 82

 A6
 AT543
 ---
 AKQT96

 J2
 KJ82
 J8754
 J4

The bidding starts 1-Pass-1-1-?  East can try splintering and cuebidding and what-have-you, but the only thing that works is just bid the slam.

Tuesday Summary Results

Tuesday Charity Pairs: Fay Teal & Henry Unglik

Tuesday I/N Pairs: Peter Rans & Jean McGuire
